Managing People Effectively
Increasing Personal Power
What are you an expert in?
Illustration.
I have an extensive knowledge of Bioenergetics and its application in the business world -
what the Centaur model calls ‘Artful Management’. It takes in to account individuals’
personal psychology and manages them accordingly.
What is it you are currently thinking about/care about in the world of work?
I feel it is vital for the world of work to take on board, and extend, a much deeper understanding of how human beings work and what they need to thrive.
What would you like to see change in organisations?
I would like to see organisations having empathy and a mature understanding for the welfare of others - not just paying lip-service to these values.
What is special about Praxis?
Its quite extraordinary breadth of imagination with regard to the people and skills it seeks out to enrich the courses.
Why does the programme you teach at Praxis matter in business?
Managing People Effectively and Increasing Personal Power develop caring skills in the
delegates, which they take in to the workplace. The programmes broaden minds to the point where people can see clearly how remarkably different we all are from one another; know how to anticipate pitfalls and bring out the best in us all.
How would you describe your teaching style?
Friendly and seeking actively to engage delegates, not just to talk at them.

Foundation Studies, Harrow School of Art, 1970

Work Experience
Publicity Designer: five years in London theatre.
I worked on the poster and publicity design for several West End shows, including
`Clouds` and Pinter`s `The House`; The Royal Court and many Hampstead Theatre productions, including `Abigail`s Party` and `Outside Edge`; ground-breaking fringe companies - Joint Stock being one, at the time when it included actors such as, Anthony Sher, Julie Covington and Simon Callow; and various touring companies.
I worked full-time for the fringe company, `Foco Novo` in London, when it produced the first stage production of `The Elephant Man` in 1976. This transferred to the National Theatre and was made in to a film produced by Mel Brooks.
I have wide experience in graphic design and illustration, and have animated computer graphics for companies such as, Beecham, the Portuguese Stock Exchange and National Mint and Cyanamide Pharmaceuticals. I have also designed trade stands for exhibitions in London, New York and Amsterdam.
Over the last twenty years, I have illustrated a lot of training material, including that for practitioners in Bioenergetic therapy. This is a psychological system which addresses the body/mind and originates from Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen. Bioenergetics is the basis for the Centaur model, which is taught on several of Cranfield’s programmes including, ‘Managing People Effectively’ (MPE), ‘Increasing Personal Power’ (IPP) and ‘Organisational and Interpersonal Skills in Management” (OIPS).
I spent seven years in Bioenergetic therapy. This led to my being invited to lecture at Praxis on the subject, on the MPE and IPP programmes, orignally with Sandy Cotter and Andy Logan.
Interests
The Arts: art, theatre, cinema and music. I am very good with my hands - I build and upholster furniture, frame pictures and make clothes.
